Astronomers have discovered the smallest and most massive white dwarf ever seen. The smoldering cinder, which formed when two less massive white dwarfs merged, is heavy, "packing a mass greater than that of our Sun into a body about the size of our Moon," says Ilaria Caiazzo, the Sherman Fairchild Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate in Theoretical Astrophysics at Caltech and lead author of the new study appearing in the July 1 issue of the journal Nature. "It may seem counterintuitive, but smaller white dwarfs happen to be more massive. This is due to the fact that white dwarfs lack the nuclear burning that keep up normal stars against their own self gravity, and their size is instead regulated by quantum mechanics." |

Google Reader is one of those services that we wish would still be around today, along with the likes of Inbox, Hangouts (in its old form), and many others. But as someone who needs to keep up with different websites and sources on a daily basis, RSS feeds are the best way to do that. With Google Reader gone, finding a good RSS feed reader is much more difficult than you would expect. Feedly does the job just fine, most of the time, but it's lacking features found in other services like Feedbin or Inoreader. With Chrome 92 for Android, Google resurrected Reader in the form of "Web Feed", allowing you to subscribe to and follow websites from the browser. After you've followed a couple of websites, the latest posts will appear whenever you open up Chrome's New Tab Page. Web Feed first arrived in Chromium, but it's since moved into Chrome Beta and is available for you to start using today, with a catch. Enable the Web Feed Flag in Chrome If you were to try and find this new Web Feed feature right now (provided that Chrome is updated), you wouldn't be able to find it. That's because Google still isn't ready for everyone to start using it just yet. Instead, you'll have to enable the Chrome Flag for it before the Web Feed will appear. Here's how to access Chrome Flags and enable the Web Feed Flag: Check to make sure that you are running the latest version of Chrome in the Play Store. Open the Chrome app on your Android phone. Type chrome://flags in the address bar. Tap in the search box at the top of the page. Type Web Feed. Under Web Feed, tap the box that currently says "Default". From the drop-down menu, select Enabled. After you tap Enabled, Chrome will throw up a prompt at the bottom stating that the flag won't be enabled until Chrome is restarted. There's also a nice little Relaunch button that you can tap to automatically re-launch Chrome instead of doing it yourself. After Chrome relaunches, the Web Feed feature should now be enabled. Use Web Feed in Chrome for Android Now that the flag has been enabled, you can now start using the new Web Feed in Chrome for Android. Here's what you'll need to do in order to follow your favorite websites: Open the Chrome app if it's not still open. Navigate to the website that you want to follow. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner. At the bottom of the drop-down menu, tap the + Follow button. After you follow the website, a prompt will appear at the bottom confirming that you followed the website, along with providing a button to "Go to feed". You can tap that now and it will take you to the New Tab page in Chrome so you can check out the articles. But in the future, all you'll need to do is tap the Home icon in the menu bar at the top. On the New Tab Page, there will be a new section called "Following". This is placed next to the "For you" feed that you may have become accustomed to over the years. Just tap the Following section and you'll be able to view the Web Feed for any sites that you have followed. How to manage Web Feed in Chrome for Android So what if something changes and you don't want to follow a website anymore? Or you want to see what websites you're following because you can't remember? You can manage the Web Feed right from Chrome, without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops. Open the Chrome app on your Android phone. If you are not already on the New Tab Page, tap the Home icon in the top menu bar. Tap Following. Tap the Gear icon to the right of the Following header. Select one of the following: Manage Learn More Turn off If you tap Manage, you'll be taken to a Chrome settings panel that offers control over much more than just the Web Feed. From this screen, tap Following and then tap the checkbox next to the website that you don't want to follow anymore. Tapping the Turn off option will simply remove the Following tab from appearing on the New Tab Page. |

Language distinguishes us humans; we learn it through experience and social interactions. Especially in the first year of life, human vocalizations change dramatically, becoming more and more language-like. In our closest relatives, non-human primates, language development was previously thought to be largely predetermined and completed within the first few weeks after birth. In a behavioral study now published, researchers from the German Primate Center, the University of Tübingen and the Rockefeller University New York were able to show that the infantile development of vocalizations in common marmosets also includes an extended flexible phase, without which language development in humans would not be possible. The common marmoset is therefore a suitable animal model to better understand the evolution of early infant speech development. |

In the journal Angewandte Chemie, a team of researchers has now introduced a novel type of click reaction that is also suitable for living cells and organisms. |

The European Commission finally granted the UK data adequacy yesterday, only two days before the expiry of the extended transition period for data flows. This means that, for now, European businesses can continue to send data to the UK without additional safeguards and paperwork. This is great news for UK plc, especially the tech sector, but there’s a sting in the tail. The UK adequacy decision is uniquely vulnerable. It has a sunset clause, so will have to be formally reviewed and re-presented for approval in 2025. It will be under continuous review because the Commission, the European Parliament and the European Data Protection Board all fear that the UK intends to diverge significantly from the approach to data protection enshrined in the GDPR. |

You might not have to settle for static photos of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Leaker Evan Blass has shared what appear to be official videos showing Samsung’s upcoming foldable from virtually every angle, both closed and open. The clips are short, but provide a good sense of how the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will improve on the original model (no, there’s no Z Flip 2). Most notably, they show off the larger, reportedly 19.-inch external display and two-tone back panel — you should have an easier time checking notifications or taking photos without popping the clamshell open. You only see a handful of the Z Flip 3 color range across the videos, including beige, black, gray, and light violet. Samsung is rumored to have dark blue, dark green, pink and white hues in development. See also: The best foldable phones If earlier leaks are accurate, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 would run on a Snapdragon 888 chip and carry a larger battery than its predecessors. There have been claims Samsung would introduce an under-display selfie camera, although that isn’t necessarily the case — the video clearly shows a cutout at certain angles. Samsung hasn’t said much about when it might put the new Flip on store shelves. However, rumors (and history) suggest the folding phone could be introduced at the company’s near-customary Unpacked event in August. If so, you could have the phone in your hands before the summer is over.Samsung Galaxy S10 Series Get July 2021 Android Security Patch: Report

Running Android apps via the Amazon App store is one of the biggest features of Microsoft’s new Windows 11 operating system, but Google might have just complicated things a bit. In a change of policy, Google is requiring app developers to embrace the new Android App Bundle standard, and move away from the APK file format that otherwise could have been used to sideload Android apps in Windows 11. Although the change only applies to new apps listed on the Google Play Store starting August 2021 (and not third-party or private apps,) Google runs through some important notes in its announcement of the change. The first of those is that the new Android App Bundle format will replace APK as the standard publishing format. In fact, over 1 million apps are already using the Android App Bundle format, per Google. This is great in the long term for Android. In the other note, Google mentions the new format allows for smaller app sizes, as well as security features — but this could still pose a bit of a problem in Windows 11. That’s because the Amazon App Store’s catalog of apps is limited in scope. Many users are already hoping to sideload otherwise unavailable and popular Android apps by using APK files on Windows instead — which Microsoft said would be possible. Of course, sideloading APKs poses security risks and other issues, but the reaction to the news seems to be upsetting Windows and Android fans. With APKs on the way out, it could be harder to sideload popular Android apps in Windows 11 come the time when the feature is available. The Android App Bundle format only works with Google Play, which depends on Google Play services, which appears to not support Windows 11. Windows 11 will be coming this fall, and it comes with some new features other than the Android app support via the Amazon App Store. A visual redesign and multitasking features are two features. The new Widgets section, an improved tablet mode, redesigned File Explorer, and a new settings app are just some of the other changes. You can beta test Windows 11 for yourself now via the Windows Insider Program in just a few steps — without the Android app support, of course. Microsoft mentioned that this feature would be coming at a later point this year.Google sunsets Android APKs for App Bundles instead - Android Authority

At CES 2021, we learned that LG planned to upgrade its LCD TV lineup with mini-LED backlight technology under the label “ QNED TV,” but now we finally have more details, including pricing and availability. LG’s first QNED TVs will hit retail outlets in July, with an entry price of $2,000 for a 4K 65-inch model. There will also be 8K models available. LG has always touted the picture quality benefits of its OLED TVs, and for good reason. On an OLED TV, each pixel generates its own brightness, resulting in the best black levels and contrast you can get in a TV. But with the advent of mini-LED backlighting, it’s possible for LED and QLED TVs to get much closer to OLED’s advantages in this area because they allow for much finer-grained control over brightness than regular LED backlights. Mini-LEDs are so small, manufacturers can fit thousands of them into a space that once held hundreds of LEDs or even fewer. LG’s 86-inch 8K QNED99, for instance, has about 30,000 mini-LEDs, which are then divided into 2,500 local dimming zones. LG says this lets the QNED99 deliver a 10x better contrast ratio than the company’s non-QNED models. In addition to using thousands of mini-LEDs for better brightness and contrast, LG’s QNED TVs also use the company’s quantum dot nanocell technology. These tiny particles help to improve the TV’s color accuracy without diminishing overall brightness. LG claims that its QNED TVs achieve 100% of the Digital Cinema Initiatives’ P3 color space (DCI-P3) — an important capability if you want to see movies in their full glory. Beyond the new picture performance enabled by mini-LED backlights, these QNED models boast most of the features we’ve come to expect from LG’s OLED TVs, like Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos, hands-free voice control, Google Assistant and Alexa Built-in, and Apple Airplay 2. They also sport excellent support for HDMI 2.1 features, like HDMI eARC, variable refresh rate (VRR), auto low-latency mode (ALLM), and 4K resolution at 120Hz — all of which will make gamers very happy indeed. Microsoft’s hardware requirements for Windows 11 have been undoubtedly confusing, with users questioning why they need both an 8th-gen Intel Core CPU and TPM functionality to upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft has attempted to answer the question. In a blog post, David Weston, director of enterprise and OS security for Microsoft, explained that TPMs (Trusted Platform Modules) are part and parcel of Microsoft’s response to a growing level of cybercrime, including phishing and ransomware. PCs with TPMs inside offer a greater level of protection from those attacks, Weston wrote. Weston explained that Microsoft has helped push the PC platform forward from 2019’s secured-core PCs, which began combining hardware and firmware protections with virtualization. But Microsoft needs a more solid foundation for the future, and TPMs enable that, Weston wrote. All new Windows 11 PCs will ship with a TPM 2.0 inside, he said. “PCs of the future need this modern hardware root-of-trust to help protect from both common and sophisticated attacks like ransomware and more sophisticated attacks from nation-states,” Weston wrote. “Requiring the TPM 2.0 elevates the standard for hardware security by requiring that built-in root-of-trust.” In the future, Weston added, you’ll see PCs with the Pluton technology, which Microsoft co-developed with AMD, integrated into AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm CPUs for the PC. Pluton further integrates the TPM into the PC’s microprocessor, establishing a secured channel to Microsoft’s Azure cloud for secured Windows updates and firmware updates, too. The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a chip that is either integrated into your PC’s motherboard or added separately into the CPU, Weston explained. Its purpose is to help protect encryption keys, user credentials, and other sensitive data behind a hardware barrier so that malware and attackers can’t access or tamper with that data. TPMs can be discrete chips on a PC’s motherboard, but more recently they’re been directly integrated into the CPU itself as a logic block. Knowing the differences between a TPM 1.0 chip and a TPM 2.0 chip aren’t really necessary for the enthusiast PC owner, but Microsoft points out several differences: TPM 2.0 supports more sophisticated cryptographic algorithms, provides a more standardized experience, and, most importantly, can be integrated into a CPU. In a Twitter post on Thursday, Weston pointed out that almost every CPU in the last five years includes a TPM, either called the Intel PTT, or the AMD PSP fTPM. Microsoft has required such a TPM to certify PCs since at least 2015. However, you may need to go into your BIOS and enable that functionality. Robert Hallock, director of technical marketing at AMD, also noted that most PCs already support a first-gen TPM. Microsoft’s upgrade process for Windows 11 has been confusing on several fronts. First, the requirements for upgrading haven’t been made clear. As ZDNet noted, there are actually two tiers of Windows 11 compatibility: a “soft floor” where a user’s PC includes a TPM 2.0, and a “hard floor” where the PC only has a TPM 1.0, a dual-core CPU, and 4GB of RAM. The “hard floor” is the minimum configuration mentioned earlier: If your PC doesn’t meet those specifications, you won’t receive Windows 11. Devices that meet the “soft floor” will receive a notification that a Windows 11 upgrade is not advised. But Microsoft also leaves the definition of a “soft floor” PC exceptionally vague, and leaves open the possibility that even a PC with TPM 2.0 functionality inside of it might not receive Microsoft’s recommendation to upgrade to Windows 11. That’s the second area where Microsoft could improve: the PC Health Check app. If you’ve tried to run the app to check whether your PC is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11, and Health Check has told you that it’s not, it’s not clear whether your device doesn’t meet the “hard floor” minimum requirements, or Microsoft is simply telling you that the upgrade is not advised. Microsoft is promising revisions to the Health Check app to clear up the confusion. Clearly, security is becoming more tightly integrated into PCs, with more sophisticated methods of combating malware. What we’re seeing is a clash between the ideology of the PC—that, essentially, it will run forever—and Microsoft’s contention that older hardware needs to be jettisoned for security’s sake. Microsoft certainly could have done a better job of preparing us for this shift, but at least those who can’t be upgraded to Windows 11 will be able to run Windows 10 until 2025.Yes, Windows 11 was just ported to a six-year-old smartphone

The Google Pixel family has long had a list of features that make it a go-to for die-hard fans. Whether it’s the vanilla Android experience or the powerful camera, the Pixel packs some features that set it apart from the pack. As Android nerds, we’re always on the lookout for Google Pixel deals. With the Google Pixel 5 finally here, we’re hoping that we’ll start to see bigger discounts on previous variants soon. Even with the Google Pixel 5a potentially on the horizon, there hasn’t been a significant price drop on the Pixel 5 in a long time. Trust me, I’ve been checking. In lieu of any discounts on a new model, you can save $270 by picking up this Geek Squad certified refurbished Pixel 5 for just $429.99. We recommend the Pixel 5 at full price, so landing one for under $450 is a great opportunity. In particular, it offers a fantastic display, great battery life, wireless charging, an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, and an excellent UI. This particular phone is locked to the Verizon network, so it would need to be unlocked to work with a different carrier. See also: The best Google Pixel 5 cases you can buy Some people are skeptical about refurbished products, but Geek Squad certified refurbs are tested to verify they work like new and restored to the original factory settings. The worst you can expect is the possibility of minor superficial blemishes, and a 90-day warranty ensures your peace of mind. Google’s Pixel 5 was a long time coming, and it turned out to be worth the wait. It’s not the highest-spec phone on the market but that wasn’t the aim. At $700 retail price, it ditches higher-end features like face recognition and the quirky Motion Sense gestures to bring you the stuff you love: a fantastic display, great battery life, and joyous software. The Pixel 5 officially hit the market at the end of October. That means it’s not going to be seeing big discounts for some time, but you can do better than retail value here and there. As an unlocked option, Best Buy will offer you $50 in savings as long as you activate it to a network on purchase. The Google Pixel 4a takes many of the style cues from the Pixel 4, though it starts at the incredibly low price of just $349. If you want the best Google’s software can offer you at the lowest possible price, it’s tough to overlook the Pixel 4a and its powerful camera. Like the Pixel 5, the Pixel 4a isn’t yet discounted anywhere in unlocked form, but you can save $50 from Best Buy if you activate it on a carrier when purchasing. Save $50 on a Pixel 4a with activation at Best Buy Get the Pixel 4a for $336 plus a $150 prepaid Mastercard and Nimble charging bundle from Visible The Pixel 4a 5G is, in essence, the 5G-enabled version of the Pixel 4a, but that’s not the only upgrade. The phone has a bigger screen, features a faster Snapdragon 765G processor, and comes with a bigger battery. It hits the balance between premium and budget perfectly, making it one of the best mid-range phones on the market. After less than one year on shelves, Google is axing the Pixel 4 from its lineup. That means you’ll have to hurry if you want the newest Pixel flagship in your pocket. There are pros and cons to the Pixel 4, but it offers a camera experience that’s tough to top. The best, unlocked Pixel 4 deals available right now are from Amazon and eBay. There aren’t any hoops to jump through so you can bring the phone to your carrier of choice. Learn more about the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in our full review. You might miss features like wireless charging and a water resistance rating, but there are plenty of tradeoffs that are worth the money. The Pixel 3a and 3a XL use Google’s powerful 12MP camera and both phones even have headphone jacks. See also: The best Google Pixel 3a casesAT&T RCS now default for Android with Messages by Google

Apple announced iOS 15, the newest version of its mobile operating system, at WWDC 2021. The software will eventually replace iOS 14 on compatible iPhone models, and adds new features and several changes to the overall look. The final release will come later in 2021, but the public beta can be downloaded and tried from June 30. Whether you decide to download it or not, settle in while we explain what’s coming to an iPhone near you soon. If you can’t wait until the end of the year to try iOS 15, there’s good news. Apple released the public beta version of the software on June 30, which means anyone with a compatible iPhone can download and install the software right now. It’s easy to do: Just visit Apple’s dedicated iOS 15 beta website and sign in, and Apple will guide you through the process to enroll your iPhone. Just be aware the software is not final, and some features may not work, some apps may not be compatible, and bugs may stop your phone from working normally. Therefore, it may not be suitable for the phone you use and rely on each day. Now, let’s take a look at the features included in iOS 15. Apple knows how important video calls and messaging are today, and it has announced a variety of new features for both FaceTime and Messages that are all built around SharePlay. SharePlay is about listening, watching, and sharing together with friends and family. For example, during a FaceTime call, you can simply press play in Apple Music and listen to a song together, all synced up right from the start. Anyone on the call can play or pause, giving everyone control over the entertainment. This also works with video, which can be streamed to an Apple TV at the same time, while always remaining in sync for callers. Apple’s SharePlay API will bring SharePlay to different apps, with Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Twitch, and TikTok all among the partners. It’s also possible to share your iPhone’s screen with people on a call, letting everyone browse the web or even provide advice on how to change a setting. Shared With You works throughout the iPhone, from Photos, News, and Podcasts to Safari, and lets you share articles, songs, and photos with friends as a message. Photos integrates shared photos from friends who have added you to friends and family on iCloud, and iOS 15 will sort photos with you in them and place them in your gallery. News shared with you in this way is placed at the top of your list, and you get reminders about who sent you the story. Notifications in iOS 15 are changing a lot. The biggest visual change is the Notification Summary, a block shown on the lock screen with all your notifications ordered by priority for a cleaner, more useful look. To make sure you don’t miss anything important, the summary separates notifications and identifies those that can be addressed later, such as app reminders. It uses on-device intelligence to assess which apps you interact with often, and what’s important to you, to help prioritize. The new Focus feature enhances the Notification Summary even further. You have the option to select between modes — Work, Personal, Sleep, and Do Not Disturb — so iOS 15 can prioritize notifications based on your circumstance. New widgets for the home screen let you see the notifications in your Focus mode. It can even be set to a location, and once you set your status, it automatically applies across all connected Apple devices. Throughout the notification system in iOS 15, look out for larger icons for apps and clearer text to make it easier to see what’s new and important. Apple has introduced a text scanning feature to the iPhone’s camera, and then supercharged it. Live Text unlocks text-based information from photos and works with screenshots and online photos, too. When you take a photo, it recognizes text, which can be copied and pasted into an email or text message, or you can select text from an existing photo to search online. It also recognizes phone numbers, which can be called directly from the photo. The new iOS 15 uses on-device intelligence to look closely at images. Visual Lookup lets you search a photo for information on art, books, nature, and landmarks. Elsewhere, Spotlight now searches for photos based on text, someone’s name, or even elements in a photo. You don’t even have to search for someone you know, as Spotlight also recognizes actors and other famous names. Apple Music has been integrated into Memories, where iOS 15 will build more exciting, personal collages of photos and videos based on your activities. It now builds these short shows with Apple Music tracks personalized from your tastes and appropriate to the setting. Images are all timed to the beat. To personalize them further, you can edit these using Memory Mixes to change the pacing, songs, and even the look using different filters. And iOS 15 continues to analyze the Memory and makes further recommendations on songs to use, all based on your personal tastes. Apple Wallet already keeps hold of your payment cards, membership cards, and car keys. Now, it’s expanding to include hotel keys. Hyatt Hotels is one of the first partners and will soon bring to iOS 15 keys to 1,000 hotels around the world. Wallet will also take your work identity cards in iOS 15. Your driver’s license will be the first personal identity document stored in Apple Wallet, where it will be encrypted and stored in the iPhone’s secure space. Apple stated that the Transportation Security Administration is working to accept the digital ID soon, and when you share it, a list of what will be accessed is shown. Apple wasn’t specific on when this feature would be added or whether the feature will be available outside the U. S. The popular Weather app has been redesigned with new animations to show current conditions, more in-depth graphs to show what’s happening, and full-screen, high-resolution weather maps. Apple is expanding Maps coverage to Spain and Portugal soon, and then Italy and Australia before the end of the year. It is also introducing an augmented reality (AR) view to a selection of cities before year’s end. It has been given a visual overhaul with an interactive globe overview. There are lots of new details, including custom-designed landmark icons, distances, elevation, and a night mode with a moonlight look. Driving directions have been updated in iOS 15 with more granular details on the map, including bus lanes, crosswalks, bike lanes, and better guidance for complex junctions and turn lanes. Initially only for Maps on iOS, these changes will come to CarPlay later this year. For transit guidance, Maps will follow the route for you and remind you when it’s your stop.Apple Releases Revised Versions of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 Second Betas

Citizen journalism isn't exactly new, but the rise of social media has given the collaborative form space to grow. Now, the two platforms are joining forces via Bulletin, Facebook's publishing and subscription tools for independent creators in the US. To test the new system, Facebook partnered with a some well-known individuals including author Malcolm Gladwell, sportscaster Erin Andrews (pictured), author Mitch Albom, and TV personality Tan France. "Through Bulletin, we want to make Facebook a better place for these creators, and unify our existing tools with something that could more directly support great writing and audio content—from podcasts to Live Audio Rooms—all in one place," a company blog post said. The new service, first spotted in January, comes on the heels of Twitter's Revue newsletter platform acquisition, as well as an exodus of prominent journalists from mainstream publications to Substack subscriptions. Bulletin provides each user a standalone website with customizable brand name, logo, and color palette, plus multimedia embeds and other styling options. It's expected that writers will attempt to garner an audience using subscription-based offers like exclusive content, commenting abilities, and access to private Facebook groups and Live Audio Rooms. Bulletin writers keep all subscription revenue (handled via Facebook Pay) for the length of their partnership, and are welcome to take patron lists and content when they move on from the platform. Facebook is currently offering a multi-year licensing deal to give folks time to build a relationship with readers. "We want to connect audiences with a range of new and diverse voices, and enable them to go deeper into the topics they care about," according to the blog. That means additional design options, promoting work outside of Facebook, and collaborating with other creators, not to mention legal resources, design support, and assistance with financial services. "We respect the work of writers and want to be clear that anyone who partners with us will have complete editorial independence," the company said. Campbell Brown, Facebook's VP of global news partnerships, promised more publications from local writers, thanks to a recent $5 million grant for journalists to build a relationship with audiences, monetize subscriptions, and access experts. In return, participants must regularly publish public-interest stories focused on a local community using Facebook's Bulletin tools.Facebook debuts a newsletter subscription service called Bulletin for independent writers

Last year, Apple presented us with a confusing dilemma when choosing between the iPad Air 4 and the 2020 iPad Pro. For a brief period, a processor upgrade left the cheaper Air more powerful than the premium Pro. A new report suggests that things are about to get tricky again. According to a new report from The Elec, Apple will launch several iPads with far superior OLED displays within the next few years. The iPhone maker will start with a 10.86-inch OLED iPad in 2022, followed by 11-inch and 12.9-inch OLED iPads in 2023. Those sizes are identical to the displays on today’s iPad Air and iPad Pro, respectively. The report echoes what well-connected Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo predicted earlier this year. If the new report is to be believed, then the $599 iPad Air will spend at least several months having what should be a much better display than the $799 and $1,099 iPad Pro. Sounds strange? It is. Presumably, the iPad Air 5 would still have the same minor drawbacks it has today. It would have a slightly smaller screen, no ProMotion 120Hz display, a slower processor that’s a generation behind the Pro models, and Touch ID instead of Face ID. And months after the iPad Air’s release, the 2023 iPad Pro updates will reportedly bring displays that are even better than the iPad Air 5’s. A quick display-tech primer: OLED stands for “organic light-emitting diode.” OLED panels can turn individual pixels on and off as needed, leading to deep blacks and much better overall contrast. A well-made OLED display will also have richer colors than the LCDs used in today’s iPads. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro you can buy today has an LCD panel that comes as close as possible to OLED’s strengths. Its “mini LED” screen uses a backlighting trick that can dim or illuminate thousands of different display regions, giving the LCD blacks and contrast that comes close to mimicking what an OLED provides. If this confusing crossover between the iPad Air and iPad Pro sounds familiar, that’s because it happened very recently. From September 2020 to April 2021, the iPad Air 4 had a newer and faster processor than the 2020 iPad Pro lineup, leaving some customers wondering why they would bother with the iPad Pro. That ended when Apple launched the 2021 iPad Pro, with its blazing-fast M1 chip that makes it as powerful as the latest high-end MacBooks. If you’re thinking about buying a high-end iPad today, do you buy now or wait until next year? The OLED iPad Air 5’s screen would be a massive improvement over both the iPad Air 4 and the 2021 iPad Pro lineup. If you don’t need Face ID or the ultrapowerful M1 chip, the iPad Air 5 could be worth waiting for. Of course, once you get into the weeds of asking whether to buy now or wait for the next model, you can get lost in a never-ending cycle. There will always be a better gadget on the horizon. Our advice? As long as a new model isn’t imminent – meaning within the next month or so – get the device you want today, and enjoy it. It won’t suddenly get worse once a better model inevitably supplants it. Still, it does make us wish Apple would release new iPad Air and iPad Pro models simultaneously. That would eliminate these confusing crossover periods, making for a much more straightforward answer to what $600 gets you, versus what $800 gets you.Big iPad leaks say you might want to wait until 2022

Apple is struggling to meet demand after the release of its 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablet. The company is actively searching for more suppliers who can produce mini-LED displays for its next generation of MacBook Pro devices. According to DigiTimes, the story is to be published tomorrow, on July 1st (via MacRumors), Apple is looking for an additional supplier beyond Taiwan Surface Mounting Technology, or TSMT to help cope with the electronic component for the mini-LED display in the 12.9-inch iPAd Pro and upcoming MacBook Pro devices. TSMT is reported to be the main supplier of SMT (Surface Mounting Technology) for the iPad Pro and the upcoming MacBook Pro. Since that report was published by DigiTimes, it seems like Apple has noticed that meeting the demand for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro orders and the MacBook Pro devices might exceed its limits and not work out with only one supplier on hand. The two suppliers would likely be able to meet with Apple’s demand and produce enough components. The M1 powered 12.9-inch iPad Pro was limited in stock, with long shipping times extending to late July. The global health crisis and chip shortage has also only made it worse for both Apple and its suppliers, which is why meeting the demand for the upcoming MacBook Pros is still questionable as of right now. Even if it gets released later this year, it may take long weeks or months for the devices to ship out, especially with customized configurations. Apple is expected to bring the Liquid Retina XDR display technology with mini-LED to replace the LCD panel on the upcoming MacBook Pro devices. The next generation of MacBook Pros are expected to launch later this year, however we still do not yet have any date set as to when we should expect them. The Apple Watch is getting its annual facelift with WatchOS 8 with extra workout modes, more flexible messaging tools and a new portrait watch face. Apple released the public beta of WatchOS 8 Wednesday, which gives us a sneak peek of the operating system that will be released in the fall. While there are no big interface surprises in the new OS, Apple has refined the Watch experience to bring many features in line with the iPhone. WatchOS 8 will run on all Apple Watches from the Series 3 and later. We don't recommend installing any beta software on your primary device, but if you do want to preview the new features coming to iOS 15 and WatchOS 8, you can find out how to download them here. Here are the best new Apple Watch features we've found so far. Using any portrait mode photo taken on the iPhone, you can now add the Portraits watch face to see these images on your wrist. But rather than displaying as a static image, the watch uses segmentation data from the photo to separate the foreground from the background. This means time appears just behind the head of your subject and if you raise your wrist or like to fidget with the Digital Crown, the subject pops in and out, too. I've found it works best with photos that have a lot of distance between the foreground and background, plus ample headroom above your subject so you can really see the effect. Some complications are also supported so you can put elements like battery level or heart rate on the watch face as well. The Photos app itself also gets some new tools like surfacing your memories and featured photos, so new content is synced to the Watch daily. Plus you can now share photos straight from the Watch through Messages or through the Mail app. Apple announced AssistiveTouch in May along with a range of accessibility features for the iPhone and iPad. It lets people who only have the use of one arm control the Apple Watch by detecting movement in the hand and wrist, like pinching or clenching actions. So you don't need to be able to touch the screen to interact with the watch. It's difficult to describe how intuitive this feels until you use it. Pinch your thumb and forefinger and the watch will move the focus to navigate through menu options. A double pinch moves back, while a clench is a tap action to select something on the screen. AssistiveTouch is also customizable so you could set a double clench action to answer a call or bring up the action menu. When you go to send a message, you'll now be able to use the scribble tool, emoji selector or the dictation option all from the same screen. Plus, if you go to dictate a message but find it makes an error in the transcription, you'll now be able to select the word and use the Digital Crown to make corrections. It's something I appreciate as my Australian accent often results in some pretty amusing dictation errors. Just like on the iPhone, you can send a GIF by selecting the image magnifying glass icon and choosing either from the trending list, or searching for one from your wrist. The Contacts app is finally available on your wrist so you can edit, add, browse and share without pulling out your phone. Apple has also expanded its Find My app into two new apps: Find Items and Find Devices. They do exactly what they say on the tin and you can ping items like the AirTag, or find devices signed in to your Apple ID from the Watch. WatchOS 8 also works in conjunction with the Focus mode on the iPhone, so you can limit distractions coming through or customize modes so only notifications from certain contacts and apps break through. Once you apply the mode on the iPhone it automatically sets it on the Watch as well. It's also supposed to be smart about Focus suggestions, like prompting you to turn on the mode when you start a workout. I'll need to spend more time with the beta before it can pick up my usage patterns. There are two new workout types you can track: Pilates and tai chi. They use customized heart rate and motion algorithms to better determine your effort than if you used to track these workouts using the "Other" option in the workouts app. Apple's Fitness Plus also gets a picture-in-picture mode, plus additional workouts filters. Apple has also moved the Breathe app into a new Mindfulness app. On top of being able to see animations to help guide your breathing, there's also a Reflect app that gives prompts to help focus your thoughts. I really like the new animations in the Mindfulness app and in the short time I've used them, they do help to focus my attention. Oppo Reno 6 series has been teased to launch in India soon. The new series has been listed on Flipkart, confirming availability, and teasing the arrival of two phones in the market. Oppo is launching the base Oppo Reno 6 variant and the Oppo Reno 6 Pro phones in India. The Oppo Reno 6 series debuted in China in May this year and three models were launched then – Oppo Reno 6, Oppo Reno 6 Pro, and Oppo Reno 6 Pro+. The most premium variant has not been teased on Flipkart. As the teaser page has gone live on Flipkart, the Oppo Reno 6 Pro and Oppo Reno 6 phones are confirmed to go on sale on the e-commerce site. The site has listed to phones as coming soon, but an exact launch date hasn't been announced. The teaser page has published the render of the Oppo Reno 6 Pro model, showing off the back camera design and colour finish. It is identical to what has launched in China earlier. The prices of the Oppo Reno 6 Pro and Oppo Reno 6 are expected to be similar to their Chinese counterparts. In China, the Oppo Reno 6 Pro is priced at CNY 3,499 (roughly Rs.39,800) for the 8GB + 128GB storage model and the 12GB + 256GB storage option is priced at CNY 3,799 (roughly Rs.43,200). Oppo Reno 6, on the other hand, is pricedat CNY 2,799 (roughly Rs.31,800) for the 8GB + 128GB storage model and CNY 3,199 (roughly Rs.36,400) for the 12GB + 256GB storage option. Based on the teaser on Flipkart, Oppo Reno 6 Pro+ will not be launching alongside the other two phones in the Oppo Reno 6 series. It may presumably launch at a later date. If the Oppo Reno 6 Pro is identical to the China model, then it should feature a 6.55-inch full-HD+ OLED display with 90Hz refresh rate. It will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC, paired with up to 12GB RAM and up to 256GB storage. Oppo Reno 6 Pro should have a quad rear camera setup with a 64-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel secondary camera, and two 2-megapixel additional sensors. At the front, Oppo Reno 6 Pro is likely to offer a 32-megapixel selfie camera just like Oppo Reno 6. It will pack a slightly larger 4,500mAh battery with 65W fast charging. Similarly, the Oppo Reno 6 is expected to have identical specifications to the China model. It should run on Android 11-based ColorOS 11 and feature a 6.43-inch full-HD+ hole-punch AMOLED display with 90Hz screen refresh rate. The phone will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC, paired with up to 12GB RAM and up to 25GB storage. There is likely to be a triple rear camera setup on Oppo Reno 6 with a 64-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel secondary sensor, and a 2-megapixel tertiary sensor. At the front, the phone packs a 32-megapixel selfie camera. There will be a 4,300mAh battery on board with 65W fast charging. Oppo Reno 6 should come with an in-display fingerprint sensor.Realme Buds 2 Neo to be launched in India on 1 July at Rs 599, reveals Flipkart listing

Realme’s GT series has got a bright future ahead. At the recent global 5G summit, the company laid out the strategy and hierarchy for its future phones, according to which, the GT series will be at the top. That means all the high-end features are going to come to GT series phones. The Realme Snapdragon 870-powered phone, which was previously thought would be the X9 Pro, is now said to arrive as the GT Master Edition. Now, a fresh report has tipped key specifications of the Realme GT Master Edition ahead of its expected launch in July. According to reliable tipster Ice Universe, who took to Weibo to share their findings, the Realme GT Master Edition will sport a 108-megapixel camera on the back. This is in line with what Realme announced at the summit. The company said that a camera-focused flagship phone under the GT series will arrive sometime in July. A 108-megapixel camera definitely shows the phone is big on photography, at least by numbers at this point. If true, the Realme GT Master Edition will debut as the company’s second phone with a 108-megapixel camera. The first one is the Realme 8 Pro, which sells for Rs 19,999. Among other specifications, the Realme GT Master Edition will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor, which means you can expect one of the best performances for Android. The tipster added the GT Master Edition will have a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. This is also a bit contradictory to previous reports that suggested the phone would have a 120Hz refresh rate instead. Both the tipster and previous reports have said the GT Master Edition will use a 4500mAh battery with 65W fast charging. With this new tip about the key specifications of the Realme GT Master Edition, things get a bit confusing. Realme has not said anything about the specifications of this phone. Neither did it confirm the name of the phone. However, Realme vice president Xu Qi Chase shared a photo of the retail box of the company’s upcoming phone placed before the Realme Book laptop that was teased earlier this month during the GT 5G global launch event.Realme Buds 2 Neo to be launched in India on 1 July at Rs 599, reveals Flipkart listing

Some of the code in future apps, websites, and operating systems might be written by artificial intelligence. GitHub has partnered with OpenAI to develop a new technology, dubbed Copilot, to help programmers "write better code." But don't worry, the company says AI won't replace human coders. GitHub stressed that Copilot is more than a super-powered autocompletion engine similar to the ones found in existing code editors and integrated development environments (IDEs). The utility will offer autocompletion suggestions, true, but it can also write entire chunks of code with minimal user input. Some of Copilot's standout features include the ability to write tests used to check code quality, write boilerplate code, and show alternative solutions to a given coding problem. A human programmer will still have to do most of the coding, but Copilot will automatically handle some of the most repetitive tasks. Copilot was trained using "a selection of English language and source code from publicly available sources, including code in public repositories on GitHub," and it relies on a technology called OpenAI Codex that is expected to be made available to other developers via the OpenAI API "later this summer." GitHub says that it recently tested Copilot to see if it could fill in the bodies of "a set of Python functions that have good test coverage in open source repos." It was said to have succeeded on the first try 43% of the time, and when it was given 10 chances, it successfully filled in those bodies 57% of the time. Copilot "works with a broad set of frameworks and languages, but this technical preview works especially well for Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Ruby, and Go," GitHub says. The feature will likely become more proficient with other frameworks and programming languages as its training data continues to expand. This reliance on a lot of data makes GitHub the ideal partner to test OpenAI Codex. The platform hosts many open-source projects that can be used to effectively teach Copilot and similar models how to code. The feature will get better as it becomes more popular, too, and as more projects are shared via GitHub. Copilot "requires state-of-the-art AI hardware" to function, so it's currently available to a limited number of testers as a technical preview. "When we launch a commercial product," GitHub says, "we will make it available as broadly as possible." The company didn't offer a timeline for that commercial launch.GitHub Copilot AI Lets Developers Take A Back Seat As The Machine Writes Its Own Code

If you receive a lot of messages on your Messages app, organizing and sorting through them can sometimes be a pain. But it looks like Google is working on a way to help us out with this by bringing Gmail-like filters to the app, starting out in India. The filters will help you keep your messages organized using its machine learning powers. This was something we saw in development last year and now they are rolling it out to users in India in the coming weeks. Hopefully it will also be available in other countries eventually. Basically what the feature will do is to automatically sort your messages into categories. The four that we have at launch are Personal, Transactions, OTPs, and Offers. You still get a default view for all messages but now you’ll see a carousel at the top with the four categories with their respective icons. They’re located just under the search field. This way, the important conversations can be sorted out from the bank transactions and bills and of course the now ubiquitous OTPs. Speaking of OTPs, you will also now get the option to automatically delete the one-time passwords 24 hours after you receive them. A lot of people waste time to delete these one by one when they want to clear their inbox but at least now you have that option to automatically remove them from your Messages app. You’ll see a card in the OTP category which should let you enable the option or if you want to continue manually deleting them, you can tap “No thanks”. The filtering of your messages happens on-device so the conversations still stay in the app and not on any cloud. This also means you’ll be able to have access to the categorized messages even when offline. This joins the feature that Google brought last year where suspected spam messages are automatically transferred to the spam folder. And the filters are also optional so if you prefer to just see everything under one category, go back to the unified list by going to the settings. The Messages filter will be available in the coming weeks to Android phones in India that have English as the default language. The device also has to be running on Android 8 and newer. Update your Messages app to the latest version to see the new look of your inbox.
