Sales surge for bump stocks used by Vegas gunman

Bump stocks that give semi-automatic weapons automatic firing power are flying off the shelves ever since it emerged that madman Stephen Paddock used them during his Las Vegas shooting spree, a report said.
The Georgia Gun Store in Gainesville rarely sold bump stocks before Sunday’s massacre but has been fielding calls from interested customers since the attack and claim their suppliers are out of stock, ABC Australia reported.
“Anybody that wants to get them is probably just worried that they’re going to be banned,” store owner Kellie Weeks told the outlet.
When Weeks called several of her distributors seeking more supplies, they told her they were out of stock, the outlet said.
Authorities said Paddock had 12 rifles tricked out with bump stocks among his large cache of weapons, which gave him the ability to rapidly fire at his targets. A bump stock essentially turns a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic one that allows the shooter to unleash the entire magazine with one trigger pull.
Birmingham Pistol Wholesale in Alabama had a similar experience—they usually only sell about ten bump stocks a year but started getting calls about the modifier on Tuesday after the first pictures of Paddock’s weapons were released.
A leading bump stock manufacturer, Slide Fire, said they were sold out on their website.
“We have decided to temporarily suspend taking new orders in order to provide the best service with those already placed,” the website reads.
Interested customers can sign up to be notified when more become available.
Other online retailers like Firequest and Midway USA have also sold out while Walmart has decided to remove them from the shelves.
In a statement to Business Insider, Walmart said the items were sold by “third-party sellers” and violate their “prohibited item policy.”
“[They] never should have been sold on our site. They were immediately removed.”

Kazuo Ishiguro, author of 'The Remains of the Day,' wins Nobel Prize for literature

Japan-born British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, best known for "The Remains of the Day," which was adapted for the big screen with stars Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson and director James Ivory, has won the Nobel Prize for literature, organizers of the award said Thursday.
His novel " Never Let Me Go" got a film adaptation, which starred Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield and was directed by Mark Romanek.
They lauded the winner for having "uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world."
The literature honor, presented by the Swedish Academy, is one of the five Nobel Prizes established by the will of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, in 1895. The others are prizes in chemistry, physics, medicine and the Nobel Peace Prize.
RELATED: Memorable Nobel Peace Prize winners through history
Since 1901, the literature prize has been awarded annually to an author from any country who has, according to Nobel's will, written "the most outstanding work in an ideal direction."
Past laureates include U. S. writers Toni Morrison and Saul Bellow, Britain's Harold Pinter and William Golding, Ireland's Samuel Beckett, Canada's Alice Munro, South Africa's Nadine Gordimer and J. 'People are kind of jumpy': A hurricane might be brewing off the U. S. Gulf Coast

A tropical depression that could grow into a hurricane is forecast to strike the U. S. Gulf Coast late Sunday, potentially shutting down offshore oil and natural gas rigs and dealing another blow to citrus growers.
The system off the Nicaraguan coast is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm later Wednesday and reach hurricane strength with winds of 137 kilometres per hour Sunday as it nears the U. S. coastline between Louisiana and Florida, according to the U. S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. Storm warnings have been issued for Honduras and Nicaragua.
Thirteen storms have formed across the Atlantic so far this season, killing hundreds of people in the U. S., Mexico and the Caribbean and causing an estimated $300 billion in damage. In August, Hurricane Harvey temporarily shut down about 25 per cent of oil and natural gas production in the Gulf and as much as 20 per cent of U. S. refining capacity. A few weeks later, Hurricane Irma devastated Florida citrus groves.
The storm “could affect portions of the northern Gulf Coast as a hurricane this weekend, with direct impacts from wind, storm surge, and heavy rainfall,” Eric Blake, a hurricane specialist at the center, wrote in a forecast analysis. “Residents along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida should monitor the progress of this system for the next several days.”
Orange juice futures rose as much as 2.6 per cent to $1.5940 a pound on ICE Futures U. S. in New York. Florida is the world’s second-largest orange juice producer.
“There’s been already plenty of damage; having another storm, even if it’s a Category 1, is not going to help the crop,” Jack Scoville, vice president for Price Futures Group in Chicago, said in telephone interview. “People are kind of jumpy.”
The system “definitely” poses a risk to U. S. cotton areas as well, particularly western portions of the southeast, including Alabama and Georgia, Donald Keeney, meteorologist with MDA Weather Services in Gaithersburg, Maryland, said in a telephone interview. Georgia is the second-largest cotton grower after Texas.
Cotton futures rose as much as 3.6 per cent in New York.
As it nears the U. S. coastline the storm, which would be named Nate, could strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, the hurricane centre said. There’s even a chance it could be a Category 2 storm if it passes over a patch of particularly warm water in Gulf of Mexico called the Loop Current, said Jeff Masters, co-founder of Weather Underground in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
“If it goes over the Loop eddy that would give it a lot of fuel for intensification,” Masters said.
In addition, how the storm interacts with the Yucatan Peninsula will also have a big impact on its ultimate strength, said Todd Crawford, chief meteorologist at The Weather Company in Andover, Massachusetts.
“If the storm shoots the gap between the Yucatan and Cuba, there will be limited weakening due to land interaction before the storm emerges into the Gulf,” Crawford said. “This would increase the chances of rapid intensification and would be a more dire situation for the eastern Gulf Coast.”
There’s about a 30 per cent chance it will disrupt U. S. offshore energy operations, as companies may evacuate some personnel, said Matt Rogers, president of the Commodity Weather Group LLC in Bethesda, Maryland.
Offshore rigs and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico account for about 17 per cent of U. S. crude oil output and 4.1 per cent of gas production. About 45 per cent of petroleum refining capacity and 51 per cent of gas processing is along the coastline.
The storm will bring as much as 51 centimetres of rain to Nicaragua, with some areas getting as much as 76 centimetres, and lesser amounts to Costa Rica, Panama and Honduras. The heavy rain could cause life-threatening mudslides throughout the region.
The good news is that the storm should be falling apart by late Sunday, “so it will be short-lived,” Rogers said.
