Donald Trump chose a Republican critic to join his cabinet Wednesday, the first woman on his top team after his early picks rewarded campaign loyalists.
Trump's nomination of South Carolina's 44-year-old governor, Nikki Haley, as US ambassador to the United Nations will be seen as a sign he is ready to broaden his political base.
It came amid reports that he is also considering former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, another harsh campaign critic, this time for the key post of secretary of state.
And it followed a cordial chat between Trump and the New York Times, a newspaper he considers hostile, in which he softened his stance on climate change, torture and prosecuting his defeated rival Hillary Clinton.
The 70-year-old property tycoon told the Times that he is "seriously, seriously considering" appointing widely-respected retired Marine general James Mattis as his defense secretary.
Trump's transition team spokesmen told reporters that another "cabinet level" appointment may be made later Wednesday, but offered no details as to who it might be.
The UN ambassador post is of cabinet rank and if Haley -- a staunch conservative with no foreign policy experience -- is confirmed by the Senate she will become a powerful figure in world diplomacy, despite previously clashing with Trump.
The daughter of Indian immigrants, and the first woman tapped for Trump's cabinet, Haley will also inject a measure of diversity in a group that until now has consisted solely of white men.
Last year, after a white supremacist murdered nine black churchgoers in South Carolina, Haley supported a decision by legislators to remove the Confederate flag from the state house.
The decision drew protests from racist groups and this year, while campaigning for Trump's rival in the primaries Marco Rubio, Haley called Trump out for his failure to repudiate the Ku Klux Klan.
"I will not stop until we fight a man that chooses not to disavow the KKK. That is not a part of our party. That is not who we are," she declared.
Trump, true to form, responded with one of his trademark Twitter insults, declaring: "The people of South Carolina are embarrassed by Nikki Haley! "
Trump's choice last week of the self-described "economic nationalist" Steve Bannon, head of the right-wing news platform Breitbart, as his chief strategist delighted white supremacists.
But on Tuesday, after video emerged of fans of the so-called alt-right making straight-armed salutes and chanting "Hail Trump," the president-elect disavowed the movement.
- Campaign rhetoric -
As he works with his advisers in his luxury Mar-a-Lago golf resort outside Palm Beach, all eyes will be on the appointments he makes for a sign of the direction his administration will take.
When Trump's November 8 election victory still seemed an unlikely prospect, many Republican and conservative policy experts condemned his anti-Muslim rhetoric, his affinity for Russia or his isolationist and protectionist positions.
Many of these figures are now moderating their tone and looking for work, whether they are lured by the prospect of a powerful job or are keen to serve US interests as a moderating influence inside a Trump administration.
The former Iraq and Afghan war commander, retired general David Petraeus -- who resigned as head of the CIA after he was caught sharing classified data with his mistress -- made his pitch on Wednesday.
"If you're asked, you've got to serve, put aside any reservations based on campaign rhetoric, and figure out what's best for the country," he told BBC Radio.
In May, Petraeus described hardline rhetoric like Trump's threat to ban all Muslims from travelling to the United States as "toxic" and "corrosive to our vital national security interests. "
This week a Trump aide was photographed carrying notes on a border security plan into Trump Tower. The first three points were legible in the picture, and pointed to stringent vetting for Muslim visa applicants.
The president-elect and his family will stay at Mar-a-Lago through Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday and the weekend. More meetings will be held on Monday with transition officials, his spokesmen said.

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Wayne State University Police say Officer Collin Rose has died after being shot on Tuesday night.
Rose, 29, was on life support at Detroit Receiving Hospital after he was shot in the head after stopping someone on a bicycle near Lincoln and Brainard around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. He died just after 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Rose's family has issued the following statement:
DPD Photo: WSU PO Collin Rose honors the memory of fallen DPD Officer Patrick Hill by naming his new K9 partner "Wolverine" which was Hill's code name
Rose is a canine officer who named his partner "Wolverine" in memory of fallen DPD Officer Patrick Hill. "Wolverine" was Hill's code name. He died in October 2013 after being shot in the line of duty by a murder suspect in April of that year.
Rose has been with the Wayne State University Police Department for five years.
"This is a tragedy of immense proportions," said Dr. M. Roy Wilson, president of Wayne State University.
Officials say a Wayne State University police officer has not been shot in 36 years.
Original story on Hill's death.
Rose was on duty, but off campus at the time of the shooting.
Rose reportedly stopped someone on a bicycle right before the incident. Police released a picture of a unique bicycle that the suspect was riding at the time of the shooting. Officers say that picture led them to Davis because he was identified as having been seen riding the bike.
Davis was taken into custody at Michigan and Selden and driven to the Detroit Detention Center for questioning.
According to officials, it's is not clear exactly why Rose made the stop.
Chief James Craig says Wayne State University police made several arrests in the area where the shooting occurred last night. Those arrests were related to a recent rash of car break-ins, where items were stolen.
Police say Rose was investigating those break-ins, but it's not clear why he stopped the bicyclist.
Rose was discovered by another police officer who responded to the scene.
The ATF is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the gun used in the shooting, which is still missing. Anyone with information can call 888-ATF-TIPS.

GOP establishment trash Nikki Haley hates everything Trump’s movement stands for and is dedicated to doing everything she can to crush it, as is the natural state of being for all the old-school establishment scum still polluting the party. As far as “keep your enemies close” theory goes, Trump doesn’t need to be that afraid of his enemies to display such weakness and betrayal. The upside is that it knocks her out of her position as governor, but it is certainly yet to be seen whether or not that win outweighs the loss of her appointment as our main adversary to the insanity of the globalist U. N.
PALM BEACH, Fla. ( AP ) — President-elect Donald Trump has chosen South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to serve as U. S. ambassador to the United Nations and prominent charter school advocate Betsy DeVos as his secretary of education, the first women selected for top-level administration posts in his new administration.
Both Cabinet-level positions require Senate confirmation.
While some cheered Haley’s selection, despite her limited experience on the international stage, the DeVos choice faced criticism even before it was formally announced on Wednesday afternoon. Conservatives warned that DeVos, a longtime Republican donor, previously supported the Common Core education standards that Trump railed against during the campaign.
Trump called DeVos “a brilliant and passionate education advocate” in a Wednesday statement.
“Under her leadership we will reform the U. S. education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families,” the incoming president said.
Haley, the daughter of Indian immigrants, is the only minority member chosen by Trump so far.
“Governor Haley has a proven track record of bringing people together regardless of background or party affiliation to move critical policies forward for the betterment of her state and our country,” Trump said in a statement. “She is also a proven dealmaker, and we look to be making plenty of deals. She will be a great leader representing us on the world stage.”
While Haley has limited foreign policy experience, Trump said he was impressed with her knowledge of global affairs. Spokesman Jason Miller also said the two had “a natural chemistry.”
DeVos, from Michigan, is a longtime advocate for charter schools and school vouchers. She leads the advocacy group, American Federation for Children.
“The status quo in education is not acceptable,” she said in a statement Wednesday. “Together, we can work to make transformational change that ensures every student in America has the opportunity to fulfill his or her highest potential.”
The DeVos family has been active in Republican politics for decades, especially as donors to GOP candidates and the Republican Party. DeVos’ husband, Dick, is an heir to the Amway fortune and a former president of the company.
The couple gave $22.5 million to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington in 2010, at the time the largest private donation in the center’s history.
Hours before the DeVos pick was announced, conservative policy leader Frank Cannon, president of American Principles Project, called her “an establishment, pro-Common Core secretary of education.”
“This would not qualify as ‘draining the swamp,'” Cannon said, referencing Trump’s campaign trail slogan. “And it seems to fly in the face of what Trump has stated on education policy up to this point.”
There was less immediate opposition to Haley’s selection.
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham praised his home-state governor as a good choice and said in a statement that he looks forward to working with her on “overdue reforms of the United Nations.” Graham is chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Operations Subcommittee on Appropriations, which is responsible for funding the UN and all American foreign assistance.
Haley said she accepted the assignment partly out of “a sense of duty.”
“When the president believes you have a major contribution to make to the welfare of our nation, and to our nation’s standing in the world, that is a calling that is important to heed,” she said in a statement.
Not all presidents have treated the ambassadorship to the U. N. as a Cabinet-level position, and Republicans have tended not to grant that status.
Miller said Trump is “spending significant time” weighing his choice for secretary of state. Among those he has interviewed is 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who repeatedly denounced Trump during the 2016 campaign.
After secretary of state, the UN ambassador is the highest-profile diplomatic position, often serving as the voice for U. S. positions on the international stage. As part of the Cabinet, Haley would have more opportunity to shape U. S. policies, rather than simply defend the administration’s positions.
Yet it could be an awkward role at times. Trump campaigned on the theme of “America first” and said he is skeptical about “international unions that tie us up and bring America down.” Trump has also described the United Nations as weak and incompetent.
Haley would be the third consecutive female U. S. ambassador to the UN, after Susan Rice and Samantha Power, the current ambassador.
Haley’s new job clears the way for Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster to step into the role of South Carolina governor. McMaster was an early Trump endorser, backing him before the state’s GOP primary in February.
Bad blood between Trump and Haley was evident through much of the campaign.
“The people of South Carolina are embarrassed by Nikki Haley!” Trump wrote on Twitter in March. Haley denounced several of Trump’s campaign comments and urged voters to “reject the siren call of the angriest voices.”
DeVos, too, was slow to warm to Trump.
She told The Associated Press in July, “A lot of the things he has said are very off-putting and concerning.”
Trump is spending Thanksgiving with his family at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — The Latest on the Chattanooga school bus crash that killed five children (all times local): 5:30 p.m. Federal investigators say that the site of a school bus crash that killed five children was not on the designated route. National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Christopher A. Hart says it's unclear why driver Johnthony Walker had taken the bus down Talley Road in Chattanooga. Investigators also don't know whether he had taken the same route before. Hart says the NTSB is bringing in a specialist to analyze video and audio recordings made on interior cameras that were damaged in Monday's wreck. Investigators are facing similar challenges in retrieving speed and braking information from the engine control module that has been removed from the bus. ___ 5:25 p.m. The NFL's Tennessee Titans announced the team's foundation is donating $25,000 to The Woodmore Fund to benefit the families of victims of the Chattanooga school bus crash. The Titans also will wear "W. E. S. " decals on their helmets Sunday when they play the Chicago Bears in honor of the five Woodmore Elementary School students killed when their bus crashed on Monday afternoon. Controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk says the Titans were stunned and saddened by news of the fatal bus crash Monday. The Woodmore Fund was created with the United Way of Greater Chattanooga and other partners to help support the needs of the victims' families. Earlier in the day, University of Tennessee football coach Butch Jones and a handful of players traveled to Chattanooga to visit victims in the hospital. ___ 4:30 p.m. A passenger on the school bus that crashed in Chattanooga and his mother have filed a lawsuit against the bus driver and the company that provides busing for the Hamilton County schools. Media outlets report attorney Herbert Thornbury represents Kimberly Boling and the 8-year-old boy. The lawsuit claims 24-year-old Johnthony Walker was driving negligently and carelessly and caused the collision, which resulted in the deaths of five children. Walker is charged with five counts of vehicular homicide. The bus was carrying students from an elementary school when it turned over and hit a tree Monday afternoon. The lawsuit against Walker and Durham School Services contends the boy may be permanently injured, sustained pain and suffering and will incur medical and other expenses as a result of the wreck. ___ 3:30 p.m. Police say toxicology reports on the driver of the bus that crashed in Chattanooga, killing five children, show no trace of drugs or alcohol. Chattanooga Police Sgt. Austin Garrett announced Wednesday that a blood test was conducted on 24-year-old Johnthony Walker, who is charged with five counts of vehicular homicide. Police say he was driving well over the posted 30-mph speed limit when he lost control of the bus. Garrett said police are continuing to interview witnesses and review video footage of the crash. Six children remain hospitalized. ___ 3:40 a.m. A pediatric emergency room doctor at the hospital where students were taken after a Chattanooga school bus crash killed five children says matching the injured with parents was a long process. Dr. Darvey Koller of Children's Hospital at Erlanger said Tuesday that the children were scared and dazed and so young that many couldn't spell their names or remember their parents' names. Koller says several of the children said "Momma" when asked who their parents were. Twenty-three children were taken to hospitals Monday afternoon. Twelve were still there Tuesday evening, including six still in critical condition. Police said the bus was traveling too fast when it veered off a narrow, winding road and crashed into a tree. The driver, 24-year-old Johnthony Walker, was arrested and charged with five counts of vehicular homicide.

(WXYZ) - Consumer Reports has released its annual list of top 10 Black Friday shopping tips help you score the best deals and keep the frustration to a minimum:
1. Start early. Ah, remember when Black Friday simply meant checking the ads in the Sunday circulars to see which local retailers had the best deals? Things sure have become more complicated. Not only has Black Friday morphed into a whole month of deals and savings, but online retailers also regularly update prices throughout the event. So you'll need to check out the specials being offered in the weeks leading up to Black Friday. Watching these early deals will help you judge how good the actual Black Friday sales really are once it's crunch time. The same goes for Cyber Monday, which now stretches into a week of online specials.
2. Do your homework. Only rookies head out on Black Friday unprepared. Getting ready means studying the ads—in print and online—the weekend before Thanksgiving. In fact, Black Friday leaks are already starting to appear. (We've weighed in on Dell's electronics deals, plus TV sales at BJ's, Kohl's, and Sam's Club.) You'll find tons of leaked ad scans on Black Friday-focused websites such as bfads.net , bestblackfriday.com , gottadeal.com , and theblackfriday.com. Some of these let you filter your searches by product category.
3. Compare prices. If you spot a great deal at one retailer, check out some of the comparison sites, which include FatWallet , PriceGrabber.com , PriceWatch.com , Shopping.com , and ShopZilla to make sure you can’t do better elsewhere. (Don't forget Google Shopping and NexTag.com .) There are also a growing number of apps, such as ShopSavvy and BuyVia, that let you scan bar codes to compare prices, get discounts, and score coupons from local retailers. (See tip No. 6, below, for additional shopping apps.) Even Pinterest has price-drop alerts that will monitor items you've pinned on certain websites and email you with the price differences when they go on sale. But be forewarned: Direct comparison shopping isn't always easy, or even possible. For instance, large retailers apply their deepest discounts to sets with a unique model number, which makes it hard to be sure that you're doing an apples-to-apples comparison.
4. Be loyal. Stores often have loyalty programs that offer sales and promotions to their members first, then let them earn rewards on what they buy. Sign up for Black Friday shopping alerts about upcoming promotions, coupons, and discounts. In some cases, you can even learn whether products you want are in stock or eligible for a buy-online/pick-up-at-store option that saves you on shipping charges.
5. Get social. The Facebook pages and Twitter feeds of your favorite retailers are a great way to find out about deals and promotions. Those retailers will often reward customers who "like" them or follow them with special alerts to Black Friday discounts and incentives. And, of course, texts, tweets, and social media posts are an easy way to share Black Friday shopping intel with your friends.
6. Phone it in. Before you head out to the store, make sure your smartphone is fully charged and loaded with a few of the comparison-shopping apps mentioned above, or ShopKick, SlickDeals, Shopula, and RetailMeNot. In addition to providing pricing info, they can often be used to place orders or monitor items via a personal watch list. Many include a bar-code scanner to help you compare prices and a QR-code reader for coupon codes and special deals. The aforementioned Black Friday sites may also have their own shopping apps, as do the major retailers' apps, such as Amazon, eBay, and Walmart. Amazon's Mobile app, for example, lets you use a smartphone camera to scan products and price shop online, while Walmart's uses geolocation—so if you've ordered online, they'll start getting your order ready the second they detect you're in the store. But as the The New York Times reports, be on the lookout for fake apps that masquerade as well-known retailer apps.
7. Create a budget—and stick to it. Yes, this sounds simple. But Black Friday sales, especially the doorbuster specials available in limited quantities, are designed to get you into the store so that retailers can sell you something else. Decide ahead of time how much you want to spend on your Black Friday shopping spree, and do your best to resist impulse buying, especially if you're not sure how good a specific deal is. If you find that you're too free with your charge cards, try buying with cash this year and see whether you have better self-control. But if you are sufficiently disciplined, buy with a credit card that doubles the manufacturer's warranty and then pay it off before any interest accrues.
8. Check all store policies in advance. It's always good to know a store's price-match and return policies. As noted in our 3 Black Friday predictions for TVs in 2016, we expect more retailers to price-match specific online and in-store deals this
year. Almost all of the major retailers have some form of price-match policy, and they've been expanding almost every year. But some stores might suspend their price-match guarantees during the Black Friday weekend on certain items, so read the fine print. Check the return and exchange policies for Black Friday sales to make sure that the store won't charge a restocking fee for any item you bring back.
9. Avoid pricey accessories. You've just scored an awesome giant-screen 4K TV at an all-time low price, so don't blow your savings by splurging on pricey accessories or extended warranties. This is where retailers make their money. Hence the hard sell. If you know you'll need an HDMI cable, buy it in advance from an online retailer such as monoprice.com or bluejeanscable.com. That way you won't be pressed into overpaying at the store, where you might pay $35 for a 6-foot HDMI cable that performs similarly to a cable you can buy for less than $3 at monoprice.com.
10. The cheapest TVs aren't always the best deals. Doorbuster specials draw people in with visions of savings, but they might not offer the best product for their needs. This is especially true for big-ticket items such as TVs. Just remember that you'll probably be watching that TV for a number of years; if you're not happy with its features or picture quality, you'll wind up spending that time regretting that spending even an extra $100 could have gotten you a set you'd be happier with. Also, those loss-leader TVs are usually at their lowest rock-bottom price. A retailer may have more wiggle room on a step-up model or flagship model, so during your Black Friday shopping don't be afraid to ask for a better price on the TV you'd really like to own.

In this photo taken with a fisheye lens, riders go down the world's tallest water slide called "Verruckt" at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in 2014.
A 17-story-high water slide in Kansas City, which is billed as the world's tallest, is going to be torn down after a 10-year-old rider was killed in August.
The ride – called Verrückt, the German word for insane — has been closed since Caleb Thomas Schwab's death.
"Once the investigation is concluded and we are given permission by the court, Verrückt will be decommissioned – closed permanently and the slide removed from the tower," Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts said in a statement Tuesday. "In our opinion, it is the only proper course of action following this tragedy. "
Caleb suffered a "fatal neck injury," police told The Kansas City Star. His death shocked his community, and at his school he "was known to ask deep questions, enjoy modern Christian music and be pretty good at telling a joke. " Two women were injured at the same time.
"Attorneys for Schwab family — Caleb's father is Republican state Rep. Scott Schwab — and the women are independently investigating the accident," according to The Associated Press. "No charges or lawsuits have been filed as of Tuesday. "
Riders go down "Verruckt" in 2014.
The 168-foot-tall slide opened to the public with much fanfare in 2014, though "design problems repeatedly pushed back the launch," as NPR reported. When it opened, it unseated a Brazilian slide as the world's tallest.
"[T]he slide launches people on a large raft that organizers say will reach speeds topping 60 mph before it comes to rest after completing an initial large drop that's followed by a second rise and fall," The Two-Way wrote when the slide opened .
Kansas "is known for its light regulation of amusement park rides," according to the AP, which noted that all of the water park's rides "passed private inspections in June. "
Schlitterbahn said that its entire team is "heartbroken" over Caleb's death. "We continue to fully cooperate with investigative teams and work with the families, their attorneys and our staff impacted by this accident," it added.

Arguing with the in-laws is a time-honored holiday tradition the world over -- but with passions running high after Donald Trump's election, many Americans will be navigating a minefield as they celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday. Thankfully, the internet has stepped up with a host of tips for taking the peril out of the occasion -- starting with a list of arguments to divert from an unwanted foray into politics. Things that are OK to spar over, as listed by CNN, include: How to cook the turkey, roast, grill or deep-fry? And the stuffing, inside the bird or on the side? Cranberry sauce, canned or freshly made? What to do before you eat -- crash out in front of the TV or build your appetite with a walk? The Atlantic offers a similar list of -- disputed -- Thanksgiving-themed statements to be rolled out in an emergency: Pie is better than cake, pecan pie is better than pumpkin, apple pie is better than pecan, etc etc. Etiquette expert Daniel Post Senning offered CNN the following advice on keeping things civil at Thanksgiving: stick to non-threatening topics -- think weather, sport, kids -- do your best to keep an open mind, and if things start to take a nasty turn, don't take the bait. The subject at hand is no trivial matter: according to an online poll by ABC News and SSRS, 45 percent of Americans expect a side of politics with their turkey this year -- and 38 percent are stressed by the prospect. One woman from Arlington, Virginia, who asked not to be identified lest her in-laws see the article on Facebook, said her therapist had advised her to plan "exit ramps" if holiday conversations turn ugly. "I brought my adult coloring books, Christmas cards to address and plenty of reading material," the woman told AFP. "I may be spending a lot of time in my bedroom -- with the door shut. "

Sixty-five years later, it remains the most famous home run in major league history: Bobby Thomson's blast to win the 1951 pennant for the New York Giants over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

— Baseball Tonight (@BBTN) November 23, 2016
Ralph Branca, who died Wednesday at age 90 , had to live with the burden of surrendering that home run and always did so with grace and dignity. In part because the game featured the two city rivals, in part because of Russ Hodges' call, no two opposing players became so linked. We remember other famous home runs, but aside from perhaps Kirk Gibson and Dennis Eckersley, the pitcher eventually fades a bit into the background.
That never happened with Branca. Even as his career fizzled after 1951, he handled his moment in history with good sport. He and Thomson became friends, and in retirement often appeared together at card shows or on talk shows. He became a successful financial executive after his baseball career and he ran the Baseball Assistance Team organization for 17 years, helping those who faced financial difficulties in their post-baseball lives. One of his daughters married Bobby Valentine.

Oh, it's also possible that the Giants cheated to beat Branca and the Dodgers. We'll get to that in a moment.
Branca was a local kid from Mount Vernon who signed with the Dodgers in 1943 and reached the majors in 1944 at 18. In 1947, at age 21, he went 21-12 with a 2.67 ERA while throwing 280 innings. He made the first of his three All-Star teams and helped the Dodgers win the NL pennant. He was a big right-hander who threw hard and at this stage in his career had Hall of Fame potential. Of course, we'd never let a 21-year-old throw 280 innings these days and that would prove to be Branca's best season, although he followed it up with All-Star berths in 1948 and 1949.
He suffered a bone infection in his leg in 1948 and spent three weeks in the hospital with periosteomyelitis (inflammation of the bone). In his SABR biography , Branca said the infection eventually settled in his shoulder, which cut into his velocity. It would seem reasonable to speculate that throwing 280 innings at such a young age had an effect as well. After a poor 1950 season, Branca had his last good year in 1951, going 13-12 with a 3.26 ERA in 204 innings.
The Dodgers had a 13 1/2-game lead on Aug. 12, but the Giants mounted a furious late-season rally and tied the Dodgers to force a best-of-three tiebreaker. Branca started the first game and pitched well, but lost 3-1. The Dodgers won the second game 10-0, setting up the final game at the Polo Grounds. Don Newcombe took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth. He'd already told Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella earlier in the game that he had nothing. Robinson told him to stay in there until his arm fell off. Dodgers manager Charlie Dressen was pacing back and forth in the dugout and had started calling down to the bullpen in the eighth inning.
"He sounded frantic," Dodgers bullpen coach Clyde Sukeforth told a writer in 1976. "'Who's ready? Who's ready?' He'd always have a plan for who would relieve, when he would come in, if such-and-such happened, and so on. Not that day. "
In the ninth, after two singles and an out, Whitey Lockman doubled in a run to make it 4-2. Branca and Carl Erskine were warming up in the bullpen.
As legend has it, Dressen called down again to the bullpen. "They're both ready," Sukeforth said. "However, Erskine is bouncing his overhand curve. " Dressen went to the mound and signaled for Branca. Two pitches later, Thomson homered.
After the game, Dressen was asked why he brought in Branca. "Sukeforth said he was ready," Dressen answered.
Did Thomson know what was coming? Maybe. The Giants had spent the second half the season stealing signs. As Paul Hirsch writes,
"I begrudge the Giants the 1951 pennant," Branca said emphatically in the 2008 interview. "They deprived our owner of money he deserved, they deprived our fans of the joy of a pennant winner, and they deprived my teammates and me of the fame and glory that comes from playing in the World Series. What the Giants did was despicable. It involved an electronic buzzer. No one else used that. Sometimes you could see people in the center-field scoreboard in Chicago or wherever using towels to give signals and you could do something about it. The buzzer was undetectable, and it was wrong. "
Branca hurt his back in 1952, and then his arm, and would win just 12 more games in the majors, finishing with a career record of 88-68. Branca said his relationship with Thomson became strained after Prager's story -- and subsequent book, "The Echoing Green" -- was published. Did Thomson know what was coming? While he admitted to the Giants' pitch-stealing scheme, he told Prager he didn't know what pitch Branca was going to throw on Oct. 3, 1951.

Thomas Mair found guilty of killing opposition Labour MP Jo Cox in run up to referendum on UK's membership of the EU.
A British court has found a far-right activist guilty of killing British MP Jo Cox in the run-up to June's referendum on the country's membership of the EU.
Thomas Mair shot and stabbed the Labour Party politician in her constituency office in Birstall near the northern city of Leeds.
It took a jury at London's Old Bailey on Wednesday just under an hour to find Mair guilty of the murder.
The judge presiding over the case said the attack encompassed the "definition of terrorism" and was "done to advance the political cause of violent white supremacism".
Mair was given a life sentence for the killing and an assault on another man who came to the MP's defence.
In a statement on his Twitter account, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn called the attack an "assault on democracy".
"The single biggest tribute we can pay to Jo and her life will be to confront those who wish to promote the hatred and division that led to her murder," Corbyn said.
Cox was killed just a week before Britons voted to leave the European Union in a campaign that was marred by anti-immigration and refugee rhetoric.
The Labour MP was a campaigner for Syrian refugees and supported attempts to give child refugees sanctuary in the UK.
"Those children have been exposed to things no child should ever witness, and I know I would risk life and limb to get my two precious babies out of that hellhole," Cox told MPs during a debate in parliament just months before she was slain.
Her killer was a decades-long supporter of far-right causes, and was associated with neo-Nazi groups in the United States and South Africa, as well as the United Kingdom.
Witnesses recalled Mair shouting "Britain first" during the attack.
The murder was the first assassination of a British MP since the IRA's killing of Conservative Party MP Ian Gow in 1990.
Not an 'anomaly'
Northampton University's Paul Jackson, an expert on far-right activism, said it was wrong to consider the attack anomalous.
"This was not ‘anomalous’, but actually highly typical of far-right, solo-actor attacks. " Jackson said.
"Mair was radicalised by sustained engagement with an extreme culture, but for various reasons then took upon himself to act. There are patterns to extreme-right violence, and so care should be taken to write this off as merely an ‘anomaly’. "
Jackson said that the British government had not taken the threat from the far-right seriously enough, but Mair's conviction could change that.
"Currently, the government simply does not focus enough efforts on tackling the extreme right, and often figures within policing and Prevent have a limited knowledge base too," Jackson said.
"There are some who buck this trend, but overall the security risks posed by the extreme right are simply not taken seriously enough, or given the attention they need," he added.
"Hopefully one impact of this case will lead to a rethink. "

After Ivanka Trump appeared on CBS's "60 Minutes" wearing a $10,800 bracelet from her jewelry line, someone at her company sent photos from the interview to fashion writers to drum up free publicity. A firestorm of criticism erupted over the impropriety of profiting off the presidency, and the company apologized.
If only the bracelet brouhaha was the end of it.
Experts on government ethics are warning President-elect Donald Trump that he'll never shake suspicions of a clash between his private interests and the public good if he doesn't sell off his vast holdings, which include roughly 500 companies in more than a dozen countries. They say just the appearance of conflicts is likely to tie up the new administration in investigations, lawsuits and squabbles, stoked perhaps by angry Oval Office tweets.
"People are itching to sue Donald Trump and stick him under oath," said Richard Painter, chief White House ethics lawyer for George W. Bush.
In an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday, Trump insisted that the "law's totally on my side," and ethics experts agree that federal conflicts of interest rules largely exempt the president from running his businesses the way he pleases while in office. His company, The Trump Organization, had no comment on the conflicts issue, other than a statement reiterating its plans to transfer control of the company to three of the president-elect's adult children.
Painter doesn't think that goes far enough. In a letter to Trump last week, he joined watchdog groups and ethics lawyers from both Democratic and Republican administrations in predicting "rampant, inescapable" conflicts that will engulf the new administration if the president-elect does not liquidate his business holdings.
A look at five areas where conflicts may arise:
For use of the government-owned Old Post Office for his new Washington hotel, Trump agreed on annual rent to the government in a contract that was signed more than three years ago.
So what possibly could be the problem now?
Plenty, according to Steven Schooner, a professor of government procurement law at George Washington University who has studied the contract. In addition to base rent, the president-elect agreed to additional annual payments based on various financial measures of how well the hotel is doing. Schooner says such payments typically require drawn out negotiations each year.
"How can anyone expect a government employee to negotiate with the Trump family at arm's length and treat the Trump family like any other contractor? " Schooner asks.
Schooner thinks Trump should terminate the contract because, even if the Trump family acts honorably, the appearance a conflict will spread doubt throughout the contracting system. Federal rules prohibit government employees and elected officials from striking contracting deals with the government for just this reason, though the president is exempted.
"The U. S. government pays over $400 billion in contracts a year," Schooner says. "Why should other contractors have to follow the rule if the President of the United States doesn't have to? "
As president, Trump will have the authority to appoint a new head to the General Services Administration, the federal agency that signed the lease with Trump and will negotiate the rent each year.
Business at the hotel could get a lift if foreign dignitaries decide to stay at the new hotel to curry favor with the new president.
In addition to the Washington hotel, Trump Organization leases land from some local governments, including for a golf course in New York City and one in Florida.
Trump's extensive operations abroad raise the possibility that his foreign policy could be shaped by his business interests, and vice versa. Trump has struck real estate deals in South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Uruguay, Panama, India and Turkey, among other countries.
In June, Turkish media reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for Trump's name to be removed from the Trump Towers in Istanbul because of what Erdogan characterized as anti-Muslim comments by the candidate. A NATO member, Turkey is a key ally in fighting the Islamic State group in Syria.
In India, the newspaper Economic Times reported that Trump held a meeting in New York a week after his election with business partners who put up the Trump Towers Pune in the western part of the country. The president-elect also has a Trump-branded residential tower in nearly Mumbai with another company.
Kenneth Gross, head of political law at the firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, says Trump's business ties will raise suspicions that he is getting special deals abroad because he is president, and that this runs the risk of violating the Emolument Clause. That is a section of the U. S. Constitution that forbids public officials from receiving gifts from foreign governments and foreign-controlled companies without the consent of Congress.
"He can't avoid conflicts," said Gross, "unless he sells his assets. "
One of Trump's biggest lenders is Deutsche Bank, a German giant in settlement negotiations with the Department of Justice on its role in the mortgage blowup that triggered the 2008 financial crisis. The hit to Deutsche could be substantial, with the government reportedly demanding $14 billion.
Will a Justice Department under Trump go easy on the bank? It's not clear anyone will know. Trump will nominate the head of that agency, too.
One possible response is for Trump to make sure the Deutsche case is handled by career civil servants at Justice, and any appointee like the Attorney General is recused. A career civil servant doesn't have to worry about being fired if he goes against Trump's wishes, but may still worry about displeasing bosses connected to the president.
More than 300 positions at Justice are currently held by presidential appointees.
The odds that the IRS will rule against Trump may be no different than before he was elected, but it's difficult to know for sure.
Trump has cited a long running audit by the Internal Revenue Service in refusing to release his tax returns. If he is under scrutiny, it's not surprising. In his Oct. 9 debate with Hillary Clinton, Trump confirmed he used a $916 million loss in 1995 to avoid paying federal taxes for years.
The president nominates the commissioner of the IRS who, assuming the Senate approves, serves for five years.
Trump will also get to make appointments to the National Labor Relations Board, which rules on labor disputes. In July, the board ruled against Trump in a case involving workers trying to unionize at the Trump Hotel Las Vegas. The Trump Organization lists six other hotels in the U. S. on its website.
FLURRY OF LAWSUITS
Trump said Friday that he agreed to pay $25 million to settle three lawsuits alleging fraud at his Trump University so he could focus on preparing for his presidency. But this could also bring problems, as Trump himself has acknowledged previously.
"When you start settling cases, you know what happens? " the president-elect said earlier this year. "Everybody sues you because you get known as a settler. "
Painter, the ethics lawyer for George W. Bush, predicts the political divide in Washington is going to make things worse.
"The plaintiff's lawyers are going to get in there because they can get a good settlement, and Trump's political enemies are going to egg it on," says Painter. "You put that all together and you're going to have a lot of potential for litigation. "
Painter says Trump should sell his ownership stakes to minimize the danger the new president gets distracted by lawsuits. He adds, though, that this is just a partial fix. The famously litigious Trump already is facing numerous lawsuits.
Asked to sum up his view on Trump's situation, Painter replies, "A mess, a mess. "

CHICAGO (AP) - An Illinois high school football team that lost a playoff football game because officials made an incorrect call won't be in the state championship contest after a judge on Wednesday rejected its bid to overturn the outcome. Judge Kathleen Kennedy's rejected an unusual lawsuit from Chicago suburban Fenwick High School seeking to reverse the Plainfield North High School victory last Saturday. Fenwick said it would not appeal the decision.
